The first book in a new trilogy from L. J. Smith! Elena Gilbert is alive—again. When Elena sacrificed herself to save the two vampire brothers who love her—the handsome, brooding Stefan and the sleek and dangerous Damon—she was consigned to a fate beyond death. Until a powerful supernatural force pulled her back. Now Elena is not just human. She has powers and gifts that were bestowed on her in the afterlife. What’s more, her blood pulses with a… More >>

This is the best of L. J.’s books yet!! She’s not afraid to take chances and has produced a page-turner that also shows the real heart and soul of the characters. By far the darkest, deepest, and most gripping of her books. Oh, yeah, and Damon is hot.

I don’t understand how there can be so many one star reviews of this book. In looking over these highly critical reviews, I’ve noticed that most of them are written by fans who say that they have loved and followed this author’s work for over a decade. Their main criticism seems to be that the descriptions of some or all of the characters in this book are different from their own views of the characters. My guess is that most of these reviews are from a small group of highly invested fans who have spent years developing their own fan stories. The fact that the author is suddenly writing about these characters again is probably very threatening to them. So threatening that they are clearly trying to destroy the overall rating for this book. Unfortunately, browsers seeing the rating may conclude that Smith is not a great writer. That’s not true. It’s because her original books were so good that they’ve inspired this highly emotional response. I realize that these same fans may now be tempted to post new reviews and comments (ostensibly from new or less invested readers) to try to prove me wrong. I can only hope that they will try instead to be objective and will try to take some time to understand why their response to this book is so unfair to the author.

I loved the 1st 4 when I was a teen & as an adult now I had to buy this to see what happens but I agree w/ everyone the characters just didn’t seem the same as in previous books it seems she focused more on events this time then the character build up & the whole tree thing I just thought it dragged.Like Elena I was a little in love w/ Stefan & Damon{who isn’t}but sadly they more seemed to be in this book a shadow of former selves compared to how they were in 1st 4 books although some things Damon says is a little comical & certainly different lol but it’s just not DAMON even before his possession although I didn’t enjoy this book like the 1st 4 for various reasons I hope the next books brings better villains because even they were lacking but the good thing about them I can say is they brought out the TRUE DAMON when he tortured them for what they were doing to Elena THAT I bought but when did he fear Meredith that was out of nowhere????I admit I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the other 4 or thought I would I STILL WILL DEF BUY THE NEXT in the series because the good thing on how it was left was that there has to be another book hopefully the next will be like the 1st 4 & not this last one

I love this series. Yes it was a long wait for the series to continue, but it did! The characters are different, but they should be. They went through a lot. **SPOILER** My only complaint was the absence of Stefan! The chemistry between Stefan and Elena was what kept me so enthralled in the first four books of the series. I understand this is going to be a spin off and give us more on Damon, but there wasn’t a lot of Damon until the end! With that said, I will still wait and wait and wait for the next one and of course devour it, just like I did with this one and the whole series!

I have loved LJ Smith since I was 10 years old, and have read all of her books. I had a little trouble with this book in the beginning, but it grew on me as I continued reading. It is much more complex and spiritual than the others in the series, but the characters should grow and change as should LJ. I found the book more enjoyable and less confusing the second time around and highly recommend holding off too harsh a review until the second read.
