You Suck: A Love Story tells the classic tale of two vampires in love, but it’s not your average vampire tale. Grocery store night-clerk, Thomas C. Flood wakes up to find himself turned into a vampire by his girlfriend, Jody. Though he’s more than a little mad about his transformation, the two decide to make it work. First on their list of things to do, besides experimenting with their new powers and abilities, is finding a minion. They find one in Abby Normal, a goth teen who worships their kind. I love how witty and clever the writing is in this novel, yet it’s modern and easy to follow. It has a writing style and themes that are accessible to any thinking reader. I also like how Moore works within the vampire mythologies, creating a few new ones and dispelling some classics. For instance, victims turn to dust after they are drained of blood, and vampires cannot ingest anything but blood. These changes held my interest as I wanted to know how these vampires interacted with each other and the rest of the world.

There is nothing I disliked about this novel. It was truly entertaining and clever!

I have to find more of Christopher Moore’s novels. I had heard somewhere that You Suck: A Love Story wasn’t his best work, so I thought it would be a good one to start with. Now I’m wondering how fantastic his other works are if this is considered not as good. I’ll definitely be finding more of his work to read!

Christopher Moore is known for his comical takes on classic myths and characters. In this novel, he takes a new twist on vampires. In others, he examines Death (the classic grim reaper) and even Jesus. I’m sure a few could take offense to his writing, so it would be wise to research a bit before reader and to keep an open mind.

One of the films I regret missing at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival is a campire rock musical titled Suck. Rob Stefaniuk‘s Canadian independent rock comedy tells the story of  “a rock ‘n’ roll band that will do anything to become famous.” In a post-Twilight age, it is easy to write off any young vampire movie as just another one of those tween flicks, but this looks different. Joey (Rob Stefaniuk) is the ostensible leader of the Winners, a bar band going exactly nowhere. They’re broke and feuding with one another, and the crappy gigs they’ve managed to cobble together and call a tour are being cancelled. Even their lame manager Jeff (played with scuzzy relish by Dave Foley) doesn’t want anything to do with them. Things aren’t much better on the home front. Joey’s permanently enraged girlfriend feels neglected and isn’t thrilled that his ex, Jennifer (Jessica Paré), is still in the band. But their luck is about to change. Picked up by a rather scary goth type, Jennifer shows up the next day looking, well, paler than usual. This would normally be a cut-and-dried moral situation, but Jennifer’s recently acquired gifts get the band more attention than ever. And as the bodies pile up and the band’s tolerance for sunlight drops, Joey is faced with an impossible decision: give up what he’s dreamt of all these years, or do the right thing.

Vamprie movies are all the rage right now thanks to that teenage-angst filled sensation Twilight. If I had a dollar for every story we’d run in the past few weeks about vampires… well, I’d make a lot more money off of online writing than I do. But vampire stories haven’t always been the realm of teenage depression, and they won’t always be. In fact, Suck is about ready to reclaim the genre… for rock and roll?

From Capri Films, Suck is about a group of rock and roll wannabees in search of immortality and a record deal. The rock band The Winners are anything but, but after a chance encounter with a vampire, the band rockets to stardom, only to discover that fame isn’t everything they were hoping for. Same message – vampirism isn’t for everybody – but in a significantly different shell.

The movie just started filming and is bringing more than it’s share of rock and rollers to the movie, with Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, Moby, and Alice Cooper among the cast. Dave Foley plays the band’s manager, while Malcolm McDowell play’s the movie’s Van Helsing figure as a vampire hunter who is afraid of the dark. Rob Stefaniuk and Jessica Pare headline as members of The Winners.

I have to say, I’m ready for a new take on the vampire flick. While this isn’t exactly new, it’s a refreshing change from what we have seen, and what’s appearing on the horizon. Could Suck be the Sean of the Dead of vampire movies? We’ll find out as the movie progresses.
