One of the films I regret missing at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival is a campire rock musical titled Suck. Rob Stefaniuk‘s Canadian independent rock comedy tells the story of  “a rock ‘n’ roll band that will do anything to become famous.” In a post-Twilight age, it is easy to write off any young vampire movie as just another one of those tween flicks, but this looks different. Joey (Rob Stefaniuk) is the ostensible leader of the Winners, a bar band going exactly nowhere. They’re broke and feuding with one another, and the crappy gigs they’ve managed to cobble together and call a tour are being cancelled. Even their lame manager Jeff (played with scuzzy relish by Dave Foley) doesn’t want anything to do with them. Things aren’t much better on the home front. Vamprie movies are all the rage right now thanks to that teenage-angst filled sensation Twilight. If I had a dollar for every story we’d run in the past few weeks about vampires… well, I’d make a lot more money off of online writing than I do. But vampire stories haven’t always been the realm of teenage depression, and they won’t always be. In fact, Suck is about ready to reclaim the genre… for rock and roll?

From Capri Films, Suck is about a group of rock and roll wannabees in search of immortality and a record deal. The rock band The Winners are anything but, but after a chance encounter with a vampire, the band rockets to stardom, only to discover that fame isn’t everything they were hoping for. Same message – vampirism isn’t for everybody – but in a significantly different shell.

The movie just started filming and is bringing more than it’s share of rock and rollers to the movie, with Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, Moby, and Alice Cooper among the cast. Dave Foley plays the band’s manager, while Malcolm McDowell play’s the movie’s Van Helsing figure as a vampire hunter who is afraid of the dark. Rob Stefaniuk and Jessica Pare headline as members of The Winners.

I have to say, I’m ready for a new take on the vampire flick. While this isn’t exactly new, it’s a refreshing change from what we have seen, and what’s appearing on the horizon. Could Suck be the Sean of the Dead of vampire movies? We’ll find out as the movie progresses.

Vampire Diaries follows Elena, a young heroine, who is the object of passion for two vampire brothers. Four months after the tragic car accident that killed their parents, 17-year-old Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev, DeGrassi: The Next Generation) and her 15-year-old brother, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen, Everwood) are still trying to cope with their grief and move on with their lives. Elena has always been the star student; beautiful, popular and involved with school and friends, but now she finds herself struggling to hide her sadness from the world.

As the school year begins, Elena and her friends are fascinated by a handsome and mysterious new student, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley, Army Wives). Stefan and Elena are immediately drawn to one another, and Elena has no way of knowing that Stefan is a centuries-old vampire, struggling to live peacefully among humans, while his brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder, Lost) is the embodiment of vampire violence and brutality. Now these two vampire brothers – one good, one evil – are at war for Elena’s soul and for the souls of her friends, family and all the residents of the small town of Mystic Falls, Virginia.

Stefan and Damon encounter a dangerous enemy from the past that is hell bent on killing each of them.  This enemy goes as far as trapping Stefan in a perilous situation where he is fighting for his life.  Damon on the other hand along with Elena has to convince another old enemy (Alaric) who is a vampire killer to help them free Stephen.  Alaric is hesitate to help Damon seeing that he once almost killed him.

Lastly, Kelly after her car breaks down off the highway on a muggy road that no one should have been on anyway in the rain discovers a shocking discovery that rocks the town including Jeremy.
